Los Cabos

Why Los Cabos?

Accommodations

Accommodation choices in the Los Cabos area range from high-end luxury resorts, including some of the biggest names in hospitality (Waldorf Astoria, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Viceroy, etc.), to all-inclusive resorts, villas, and boutique hotels. Resorts offering timeshare options are also popular.

Where I stayed: Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos, located about a 15-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas. It offers 542 guest rooms and suites spread across 32 villas. They are evenly divided between the hotel side and the “club” side for timeshare members.

Activities

Scuba diving and snorkeling, beach and watersports, whale watching (prime season is from December through April), golf, outdoor activities ranging from hiking and mountain biking to camel ride tours, spa retreats, shopping, dining, and nightlife. Check out all the options for tours and activities.

Beaches

Fewer than half of the beaches in the Los Cabos region, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, are considered safe for swimming. This is largely due to riptides and dangerous currents. Medano Beach and Palmilla Beach rank among the most popular in the area. Below is a map indicating the “swimmable beaches.” (Provided by Visit Los Cabos)

I walked this beautiful beach past the De Cortez Grillhouse restaurant at Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos resort. It was, however, not deemed “swimmable” due to dangerous currents and possible riptides. I stayed away from the water and collected shells instead. © Debbra Dunning Brouillette
Lovers Beach is one of the swimmable beaches we passed on my Cabo Adventures snorkeling excursion. It’s much calmer than on the other side of the point. We were told it is known as Divorce Beach, where Pacific Ocean waters are much rougher. © Debbra Dunning Brouillette

Food and Drink

Los Cabos is becoming a foodie destination, with Michelin-starred restaurants and small cafes, bars, and taco stands. Chefs’ multi-cultural influences have resulted in menus featuring various fresh-caught fish and seafood prepared in multiple ways. Getting There

Twenty-eight U.S. and eight Canadian cities offer direct flights into Los Cabos—San Jose del Cabo International Airport (SJD). Airlines that fly to the destination include Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country, and United. Subject to change; check with the airlines for current information.)

Location

Los Cabos, translating to “The Capes,” is situated at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, extending 1,000 miles south of the U.S. border. This region encompasses the area between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, connected by a 20-mile length of four-lane highway referred to as the Tourist Corridor.

Vibe

The vibe in the Los Cabos area will vary according to whether you are based in or near the  Cabo Sa Lucas tourism district, and where you choose to spend your time away from your resort. I found the resort staff and the company I used for my snorkeling excursion to be friendly and helpful. In Cabo San Lucas, the vibe was more hectic, with lots of tourists and street vendors or others wanting to sell your their wares.

On my last day at the resort, I booked an excursion, the “Luxury Two-Bay Snorkel” tour with Cabo Adventures.  The four-hour excursion aboard a catamaran left from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. It featured a scenic tour of the area, appetizers, lunch and an open bar.

Guided snorkeling in a secluded bay was a highlight . We were later able to get in the water again for swimming or paddleboarding.

An iconic sight in the waters off Cabo San Lucas is The Arch, locally known as El Arco.

One of most iconic sights in the Cabo San Lucas area is The Arch, locally referred to as El Arco. We were able to see this natural wonder formed by tidal and wind erosion over thousands of years on our catamaran cruise. It is located at Land’s End, the southernmost point of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Learn more about it and ways to see it at this link.

Whale-watching is another popular excursion during the prime migration season for humpback whales — December through April.
