Island Treasures: Mopion Islet, Grenadines

Mopion islet. I discovered it in 2004 after surfacing from a dive on the surrounding coral reefs, and snapped the photograph above that has become one of my all-time favorites. It was only after I returned from the Grenadines that I learned the islet had a name and that it had appeared on many magazine covers.

I returned to this beautiful area in the Caribbean in November 2016 to stay at Petit St. Vincent, a 115-acre private island resort located just a few swells away from Mopion. Before the trip, I planned to finally sink my toes into this small spit of white sand, only 100 feet around,  but, alas, the days slipped away and I only managed to take a group of new photos.

Petit St. Vincent’s guests can arrange to enjoy a private picnic on Mopion, which has been described as “the quintessential deserted island” and as “a dollup of sand surrounded by a transparent sea” by Caribbean Travel & Life magazine. However, the islet isn’t owned by the resort, so anyone can stop by, and yachters often do. The islet’s single thatched umbrella was erected and is maintained by Petit St. Vincent resort.

  2. Mopion Islet seems to be a perfect spot for a romantic picnic on the beach. I wonder however if it ever gets covered by the water. Maybe during the storms, or during the tide? It surely looks pretty tiny.

    • According to the manager at Petit St. Vincent, it does vary in size, according to the tides and seasons, but never is completely covered. I am sorry I didn’t find time on this most recent trip to set foot on this idyllic spot in the Grenadines…

    • Yes, Agness, if you haven’t been to this part of the Grenadines, go! It is one of the most beautiful areas in the Caribbean and this little islet captured my attention many years ago!

  3. Mopion Islet looks divine 🙂 A true getaway from it all place! Mind you the Grenadines would be so awesome to visit and I would really really love to go 🙂 #Boomer Travel Bloggers

  4. HI all, any one on this blog ever visited St. Vincent & the Grenadines since seeing all those amazing photos and read all the beautiful descriptions by this blogger? If not, you definitely need to follow up. There are new direct flights into SVG from Miami – American Airlines on Saturdays and New York – Caribbean Airlines on Wednesdays. The flights are extremely convenient. I am from Union Island – “born and bread” so I know how gorgeous these islands.

    • Thanks, Eleen, for providing this new information on flights to SVG from Miami and New York. I love St. Vincent and the Grenadines and hope to return again soon! Thanks, too, for your positive comments on my photos and descriptions!
